It’s The Severis Tales time again with a new short story. Titled Elcra Needs a Dentist, it is the ninth instalment in the TST short story range. It concerns Elcra Winterbottom of the Winterbottom family and a personal dilemma that arises when she breaks a tooth.
At around 5,700 words, it is one of the shorter TST stories (which are usually in the 8,000-10,000 word range). This short story also takes the light away from the Severis family and shines on a family that does not have much mentioned in the previous stories. As the series progresses, some stories will give greater prominence to secondary characters. Algenon is a big world, but so is the town of Barlett and its neighbourhood of ordinary people.
For those who are new, The Severis Tales is a short story series set in a fantasy world but featuring the lives of the ordinary. It is a therapeutic experiment for me and presents an amateur perspective and honing my basic skills at the same time. Not all stories are proofread by others. In a way, that is the intention, since I gain experience in seeing how I work and learn how to fix it.
The next instalment will be the tenth story. As of TST 9, I estimate I have written about 100,000 words for The Severis Tales, and I am proud of each story and each character’s development.
I’ve been thinking of creating a series of TST stories exclusive to a self-published book, to give expansion on the origin of the Severis family and how they came to settle in Barlett. It would be a nice treatment to the series, something I think others would enjoy.
