Introduction
Another world. Magic, technology, elves, dragons, and everything in between. Ordinary people working through ordinary life. Life could not be better than this, can it?
Enter The Severis Tales, a short story series that focuses on the lives of the Severis family, and the town around them. While presented in the genre of general fantasy, The Severis Tales is not your usual epic fantasy, with major battles between colossal armies and wars between gods. This world has possibly seen some of the heavy stuff, but those events are not in the scope of the series. The aim of the series is to offer a glimpse into the lives of the people who live on their world, called Algenon. The series is set primarily in the town of Barlett, Marius County, in the country of Caldore.
The idea came about during a brainstorming session, which turned into a philosophical discussion on the subject. Specifically, in those worlds where the main focus is on plot specifics, and the wide array of characters central to the plot. I genuinely thought that, at some point, there must be value in the stories of some of the side-characters, or reference to places that aren’t mentioned again. From there, I thought of a world which could have epic stories around it, then subtracted it from the abstracted creation. From there, the world of Algenon was born, along with Barlett, the Severis family, and several of the other characters and places within town.
I should mention the purpose of these stories is part amateur and part therapy. As I gain more experience, the quality of writing, style, and content will improve. Some of them will get beta read and have comments and criticism attached to it. Fair enough. More important, it’s stuff to read and enjoy. That is what The Severis Tales is in general. I do realize that taking this course can have an undesired effect in the future, but it is a concept I wish to see happen.
